Taking a step back into one of the biggest game titles of 2012, Borderlands 2. This game is the sequel to the award winning original and brings you the same style of gameplay. It is an action role-playing, first-person shooter. As with the first, this game is built around players completing a central based story mission, with several side quests along the way. Starting as one of the four “Vault Hunters”, you must scavenge on the planet Pandora seeking the ultimate treasure. The game has an online collaborative campaign gameplay; randomly generated loot, such as weapons and shields; and character-building elements.
Players will take on quests given to them through non-player characters or bounty boards. These quests reward the players with experience points, money and even a reward item at times. Experience is gained by eliminating foes and completing in-game challenges. After gaining levels from experience growth, players can put skill points into a skill tree similar to the original Borderlands. The game also features a generated loot system when it comes to weapons and other equipment dropped by foes, found in chests, or offered as quest item rewards. A really unique feature about Borderlands 2 is the numerous statistics that are generated randomly. These statistics affect weapon damage, accuracy, magazine size, and added effects like elemental damage. The original Borderlands generated over 17 million possible guns and Borderlands 2 is considerably much larger.
Returning to Borderlands 2 are some familiar faces. Roland, Lilith, Brick, Mordecai and even Claptrap all assist during the journey to stop Handsome Jack and his evil plot. In addition, ground type vehicles are a big part of traveling along with using the instant travel system. The AI in Borderlands 2 became smarter. Enemies will now take cover and even flank you if possible.
After setting a trap for the four “Vault Hunters”, Handsome Jack destroys the train they are riding, leaving you to select a lone survivor. At this point, Claptrap salvages you from the wreckage and requests your assistance in stopping Handsome Jack from taking over Pandora. In doing so, you’ll find rare loot hidden within.
The graphics in Borderlands 2 aren’t quite what you’d expect. The style resembles comic book looking art.
The game brings you the standard sounds of most first-person shooters with a touch of sadistic noises from the attacking psychos.
The Borderlands series is always one of my favorite and Borderlands 2 did not disappoint. If you enjoy RPG or FPS games, you’ll enjoy Borderlands 2 as well. The twist in the graphics make for a fun experience along with looking for that next best weapon or shield. I can’t wait to see what is in-store for us with Borderlands 3.
