Ex Machina – Review

ex-machina

Although Oscar Isaac has be a fast upraising star of late, this film wasn’t particularly on my radar to see. Trailers really didn’t grasp my attention as I thought the movie might be another I, Robot sort of film. However, Ex Machina left a pleasant and surprising impression on me.

Ex-Machina-3

The film kicks off with a young coder working for the largest internet company winning a competition. Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson) scores a week long private retreat at the residence of his CEO. When Caleb arrives he is welcomed by Ethan (Oscar Isaac) and put in a strange, yet intriguing experiment. The experiment consist of interacting with the world’s first true artificial intelligence in the form of a beautiful female robot named, Ava (Alicia Vikander). As the week unfolds Caleb becomes more curious about the test, speculating a suspicious motive behind Ethan. Caleb also finds himself drawn to the AI and lost within his attraction to her.

Oscar Isaac does a fantastic job in captivating his role as Ethan, the highly intelligent and rich CEO. His on screen partnership with Domhnall Gleeson is captivating. The two actors do well at working with one another and play their roles to near perfection. The odd attraction Caleb displays towards Ava is very interesting. His is tasked with developing personal connections with Ava which leads to a strange relationship between the two. During these interactions, Ethan manipulates the encounters to fit his experiment.

Ex Machina film still

Alex Garland does a great job at Directing Ex Machina, a film unlike any other AI movie. The story is different and unfolds a bit slowly, but completely holds the audience attention. Aside from the story of the film has a touch of unique screens.

Ex Machina should be restricted to adults only. The film has nudity, some violence and advanced dialogue.
