Summer Series Project – Edition 4
A comedy sitcom lasting 9 seasons from 1989 to 1998. It was founded by Larry David and star Jerry Seinfeld. The show featured Jerry Seinfeld and his best friends (in the show) Cosmo Kramer (played by Michael Richards): Was the goofy next door neighbor living on the extreme edge of pretty much everything. George Castanza (played by Jason Alexander): A man always in middle age crisis, just really trying to find love, money and happiness. Elain Benes (played by Julia Louis-Dryfus): Jerry’s pretty hot ex-girlfriend turned friend. She too, finds herself in the female roll of trying to find the right man to settle down with.
The show did extremely well and hit many marks on comical ends. I believe because most men and woman from 25 on up could relate to the antics of dating, dealing with friend issues, and work. The comedy showed the 80’s generation of wanting everything and not wanting to work hard for it. Many of the episodes are still talked about today, “Lobster Hands”.
In the series finale, the cast witnesses a crime occur in front of them; and are then sent to jail for failing to enact the “Duty to Rescue Law” (which is a real law in which a person is obligated to assist another in peril IF they created the incident or if they are married to or parent of the victim). In this shows situation, they witness a man having a gun pointed at him. There is no law in place where a witness is required to assist anyone who is being robbed, they themselves would become victims. So, in this episode the entire concept was ridiculous and ended horribly.
Behind the scenes, there were many issues with the cast getting along. The biggest issue of course was money. Jerry Seinfeld felt since he and Larry David founded and created the show, as well as Jerry acting as a lead role they should receive more, and guess what? They did. Both Larry and Jerry received royalties for the aired episodes (which by the way are still airing) while the other cast members do not. All parties get royalties from DVD sells, after a legal battle between Jerry and Castle Rock Television. All actors suffered from what people are calling the Seinfeld curse: which claims that none of the actors were able to star in any longer term acting roles. Michael Richards went back to stand-up comedy and retired shortly after a temper-tantrum he had with a member in the crowd, where he repeatedly yelled out racial slurs towards that person. Julia Louis-Dryfus did some voice in acting for some digital animations and cartoons, then tried to unsuccessfully start a new sitcom called Watching Ellie. Later she would start a leading role in The New Adventures of Old Christine and Veep, the first being successful and the latter is still airing and its success is yet to be seen. Jason Alexender moved on playing in a lot of character roles, however most of the shows/movies were flops and not very successful at all.
Now, should you buy the series: Absolutely! Just avoid the last episode.
