Nicolas Cage playing a narcissist and campy Count Dracula is what carries make Renfield a gory fun time!
Renfield is a modern monster tale of Dracula’s loyal servant, Renfield, the tortured aide to Dracula. Renfield is forced to procure his master’s prey and do his every bidding, no matter how debased. But now, after centuries of servitude, Renfield is ready to see if there’s a life outside the shadow of The Prince of Darkness. If only he can figure out how to end his codependency.
Renfield was on my list of films for 2023 and I have to say it feels at the time there were 2 short films put together to get this crazy gory horror comedy that hurts the film. Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as Renfield performances are what carry this film. One story is about Renfield trying to move on from his relationship with Dracula and they tie in a good cop (Awkwafina) working in a dirty police precedent that is controlled by a local drug cartel, the Lobo Crime Family (Ben Schwartz as the loose cannon son).
Director Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War, The Lego Batman Movie) and Screenwriter Ryan Ridley bring this crazy original idea from the mind behind The Walking Dead and Invisible, Robert Kirkman. With Cage as Dracula and Hoult as Renfield, you would think that they would be able to make a great 90-minute horror film but there are times in the film when they are not present on the screen you lose the magic.
Overall, I enjoyed Renfield and would recommend it for a fun night out to the movies but if you are
looking for the next classic comedy horror, I feel you made me let down.
