Monkey Man is an Eastern Indian film that is loosely inspired by The Tales of Hanuman. The film is a look into the criminal underbelly of India. It is part slow burning mystery and part action thriller. It does something very fascinating with the cinematography which I will not go into as it may be considered a spoiler.
The film could benefit from either a shorter runtime or better pacing however it isn’t a make or break.
Dev Patel knocks it out of the park as usual. Bringing moments of levity and moments of sadness. I have heard Monkey Man called the Indian John Wick. However, I believe that is characteristically misleading as the action doesn’t turn up until later in the film.
This was a solid directorial debut from Dev and I can’t wait to see what more will come out of his career.
